Did you have a happy racist, colonial mindset day? Or, as it is more popularly known, Columbus Day.
It is true that the more enlightened, or at least culturally appropriating among us, celebrate the alternative holiday ("holy day") of Indigenous Peoples Day. (And yes, if you have bothered to click any of the hyperlinked references above, you will see that our history, and our holidays, are akin to the proverbial Facebook relationship status post of, "It's complicated.")
The purpose of this post is not to shame you for whatever holiday you are celebrating. It is to remind us all that, regardless of our race, nationality, or religious-political affiliation, we are all victims of a racist, colonial mindset.
The purpose of any "holy day" is not to simply take a break from work. Traditional sabbaths were a combination of rest from work, combined with gratitude/worship. So, rest and renew. But as my mentor advised me and continues to emphasize, "Have a meaningful holiday." That means both rest and reflection, with an eye toward continual improvement.
What racist, colonial concepts continue to limit us? Are we victims of a scarcity mindset? Is life a zero-sum game to us? Remember: We don't see the world as it is. We see the world as we are. Let's make this a truly Holy Day by cultivating a sense of awe, gratitude, and abundance thinking. And let us honor and respect those who were here before us. We can learn a lot from them.
